Another foreign country is beginning to follow in the steps of Germany and China. Australia is attempting to control and censor what their people see on the internet. However the assault on the internet is not as sinister as it might sound. The Australian government has decided to gain a tighter hold on porn sites and internet gambling sites from infecting their internet. Instead, the Australian Labour Government Prime Minister Kevin Rudd would rather put these sites on a different feed to be accessed separately. The Government stated that only sites on a blacklist would be blocked and that citizens would be able to opt-out if they wished. The problem with the government trying to make internet service providers supply clean feeds is that it greatly decreases, an already dreadfully slow, speed of downloading. IT specialists have stated that the plan is idealistic and impractical. Just the fact that the download speed may waiver is becoming a big to do with Australians. The recently elected Prime Minister promised in his running for office that he would speed up the Antipodean Internet. It was a major selling point for the Prime Minister’s campaign. “The Rudd Government campaigned on a platform promising to speed up Australians’ access to the World Wide Web by rolling out broadband around the country,” said Sue Dunlevy from Australian IT.
Dunlevy also said that the idea to
separate the porn sites and gambling sites would have a worse effect than
the government realizes. The Australian internet will be the most strained
it has been in years. |
