On January 2nd, 2008 Germany has banned gambling through the internet as part of an interstate agreement to preserve the nation's State run monopolies for lotteries and most forms of betting. No one in Germany is allowed to use the internet to gamble online, whether the company is in Germany or not. Specifically, the law bans all web based gambling or brokering of all wagering and betting games. The new law does not stop there; it also limits online gambling sites and their affiliates from advertising in any fashion. Obviously the new ban will be met with immediate legal course. Large gambling companies claim the law infringes on European Union Law. The law states there must be a freedom of products and services that promote free competition across its member countries. However, if a state run gambling monopoly is in place for a specific purpose, such as reducing gambling addiction, then they are allowed. Every single one of the sixteen state legislatures voted, approving the ban of internet casinos in Germany. Other European countries, along with at home German gamblers, cry out hypocrisy at its government’s ethics. It is difficult to embrace the leader’s decisions when they encourage their people to participate in state lotteries, games of chance or betting as long as it benefits the State’s finances. This news comes as a surprise to U.S. citizens who enjoy to online gaming, who themselves are worried about their right to gamble online. It is expected that the law will most likely be overturned in time. |
