Could it possibly be that the United States might join overseas notions that regulating online casinos is better than banning internet gambling as a whole? Could be… or at least two of Las Vegas’ biggest casinos are thinking it might come to that in the near future, and preparing to make the jump into the virtual pit.

MGM Mirage and Harrah’s Entertainment, have indicated that preparation has been initiated towards the imminent legalization of internet casinos on US territory. Harrah’s also hinted that the appeal of the industry may be so great as to spur an interest for them to look into establishing themselves overseas before the US even gets on board. The company has reportedly been expressing interest in joining markets that currently allow online gambling, such as the Caribbean and the United Kingdom.

MGM Mirage is an old hat at the trade, though their first attempt didn’t fare as well as their land-based casinos are guaranteed to. In 2001, the corporation set up camp on the Isle of Man, but their efforts were short-lived. The obstacle recorded as mightest was the difficulty in soliciting new players, and establishing registered relationships with online gamblers. They’re not discouraged, however. Quite the contrary: MGM Mirage hope that their failure the first time this century will assist and lend itself to their success the second time around.

Obstacles for both companies to consider as they proceed with their preparations include ensuring security for the sites and house, as well as the players: protecting against problem gamblers, determining their members’ locations and ages, as well as facilitating state-of-the-art deposit procedures.

It is the opinion of many, Harrah’s and MGM Mirage included, that the legalization of online poker will inevitably come before other casino games, but headway is headway and the big boys are getting ready to play.
